Check For Coupons Before Buying Online
Tagged Under : discount, food coupons, google, grocery coupons, search, search box, search program
This may seem like a no-brainer, but I know that some people don’t do it.
You know how when you buy something online, when you get to checkout there is usually a field that says “apply coupon code”?
Most people would probably just skip over this section if they didn’t have a coupon, but why not do a quick search for one?
Last week when I went to pay for my new webhost, I noticed the coupon code box, did a quick Google search and found a code for $25 dollars off! Then last night I went to order a pizza from Papa Johns, noticed the coupon code box, searched and found a coupon that saved me $10!
It’s really easy to do and can save you some good money. Just go to Google and search for the website you are buying from followed by “coupon code” or “promo code”. Alternatively you can check out RetailMeNot. This is a site that compiles coupon codes for thousands of sites and allows you to report whether or not it actually worked for you.
Has anyone had any luck searching for coupon codes lately? Let us know!
edit:
Turnip from Turnip of Power has pointed out that some of these coupon sites can be pretty shady and can actually add a cookie to your browser will give them a commission if you visit their site before buying a product. Now I normally wouldn’t have a problem with this if the codes actually work, but some of these sites post phoney codes just to get unearned commissions.
My advice: If you click through an affiliate link from a fellow blogger, don’t go to the coupon site and let them take the affiliate commission away from the blogger who rightfully earned it. If you are visiting the site directly, just be careful about what coupon sites you visit. I’ve had great luck with RetailMeNot and would definitely recommend it.

nice info , wait your another tips..
i have learn from here..:)
thanks..

I just bought sotmething ithe other day that I needed without even thinking about coupon codes even though I know they have promotions for it! Next time maybe I will remember …It’s just so unusual for me to buy stuff online I forget about that!
You know, it never even crossed my mind to do this for purchases outside of webhosting and domains. You probably just saved me a lot of money going forward.
Thanks for screwing the honest website owners. You do realize that when you look for those coupons the coupon sites are setting the cookies on your system without your knowledge. So rather than give the online sale to the affiliate you clicked the link on, you are giving it to some scumbag. The oldest trick in the book is to claim a site has coupons, they when you go there, the cookie is set and they say “oops, no coupon today”.

I understand you point point of view Turnip and that is a valid argument for not doing this. However, when I do my online shopping, the majority of the time I go directly to the site that I know I am going to buy from, hence no screwing of a website owner by looking for coupons.
For example, when I went searching for a new webhost, I read reviews, decided on a webhost, went directly to the site, and during checkout did a google search for a coupon and saved $25. I’m sorry if it offends you, but I’m always going to choose saving $25 over giving someone the referral bonus, that’s just the way it is.
I swear by online coupons. I have probably saved well over $500 this year by just using online coupons to do shopping with. Add those discounts in with a really good sale and you can save even more!

Just join the affiliate company yourself, and see all the coupons available on the internet. I am pro-coupon, but anti-coupon code site. They are defrauding the merchants and the legitimate affiliates. I could have shown you how to save $90 on hosting if you wanted. Hosting and advertising are two areas where the product is free to the merchant usually.

the truth its the coupons are out there and accessible…. it is a matter o research. i bet when someones is lookig for coupons is not thinking on keeping the ref link or whatever, they are thinking on saving money… no matter howe they do it.

I always check retailmenot (.com) they’re usually pretty good at having a code I can use online
Or, Google works perfectly as well. Whenever I see “Apply Coupon Code” I won’t buy until I find a coupon code which I guess isn’t always a good thing.

I only wish merchants would read this post and understand. “Whenever I see “Apply Coupon Code” I won’t buy until I find a coupon code which I guess isn’t always a good thing.” Which means at a minimum each merchant with an empty code box has to pay out an affilaite commission to someone. And that someone is rarely the honest blogowner, it’s usually the dishonest coupon code site owner. Merchants should state openly on their page “there are no coupon codes for this store” and then list all available discounts, for example, “free shipping with a $50 order” and so on. I like to enter coupon codes to, but down the road it actually ends up supporting criminals, some of which have recently been charged with racketeering charges for cookie stuffing.

Turnip you do make a convincing argument, and while I don’t necessarily agree with you that they should never be used, I will amend the post to add your point of view.
When clicking on affiliate links to buy things (which I do occasionally just to support some of my favorite blogs), I definitely won’t be going to these sites and letting them take the commission. But there are times that I know I can save money, and sites like retailmenot are pretty well known enough for me to be ok with using them. Plus for things like the pizza I saved 10 bucks on the other night, I think that is 10 dollars thrown away if I don’t use the code.
Thanks for offering your insight into the situation.
I know this might sound like a pain in the neck, but it’s the nature of the internet. What I do is find the coupon first. Then I clear my cookies. Then I go to the website with the affiliate link I want to benefit from my business. Once at the merchant I immediately checkout. This is the only way an honest website has a chance. So many criminals load cookies in the background, you have no idea..

Yeah coupons are cool, you get that in real life too, but it is not as convenient as virtual coupons. Thanks for the tips, I will check out RetailMeNot.
